Hellisheidi Power Plant

The first stop of our bus tour lead us to Hellisheidi, a geothermal power plant. At first glance, it only produces steam, there wasn't any noise and no fence around any part of the site! We've been told how geothermal energy is harvested and given some facts.

Systematic use of hot water in Reykjavik is taking place since 1930, this heating system reaches about 60% of Iceland's population. Most of the geothermal power is used to heat up houses (50%) and to generate electricity (34%). Households only use 10% of Iceland's total electricity, the rest is for heavy industry.
